Frassilongo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 321 · Postal code: 38050

The village has three names and they all mean the same thing. Frassilongo does not come from frassino, the ash tree, as is often repeated, but from fratta, the field wrested from the wood, from the Latin fregere, to break; the German Gereut and the Mòcheno Garait mean newly broken land, from rautn. The same goes for its hamlet: Roveda is the place of the oaks, and in Mòcheno it is called Oachlait, oak slope. Two different languages looked at the same piece of mountain and called it by the same word.

German-speaking people already lived here, in scattered houses, in the first half of the thirteenth century, brought in all likelihood at the call of the lords of Castel Pergine; from that settlement came the Mòcheno tongue, which at the most recent census six inhabitants in ten declare as their own language. The comune, on the other hand, was abolished and remade: in 1929 it was merged into Sant'Orsola and became independent again in 1948. The old church of Sant'Udalrico is already mentioned in the sixteenth century.
