Ospedaletto

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 820 · Postal code: 38050

Ospedaletto never had a hospital: the name comes from the hospice that gave travellers a bed on the road running from the Veneto to the countries of the north, and it is first mentioned in 1190. It was held, it is thought, by Benedictine monks; to give hospitality, then, was said that way.

On the flank of Monte Lefre stands the ponte dell'Orco: two pillars of rock hollowed out by water with a block of dolomite laid across them, and the story says it was the devil who built it, for a shepherd who could not get from one side of the mountain to the other. At the sanctuary of the Rocchetta, instead, every 31 July they remember an apparition of 1640 and the healing of a deaf-mute boy of the village.
