Porte di Rendena

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,757 · Postal code: 38094

This comune is a little more than ten years old: it was born on the first of January 2016 from the merger of Darè, Vigo Rendena and Villa Rendena. What strikes one is the name, because it kept none of the three. Instead of a compound name — the most common solution when two or three villages join — here it was decided to indicate a position: Porte di Rendena, that is, the gateway of the valley. It is a decision that avoids giving precedence to anyone, and that has the advantage of telling whoever arrives where they are. The town hall is at Villa Rendena; the comune is a scattered one, and besides the three former centres it includes the hamlets of Javrè and Verdesina, which already belonged to Villa Rendena.

The coat of arms was chosen by a competition, called by the comune in September 2016, and approved by the town council on 27 February of the following year. On a blue field there is a circular figure inside which a mountain is set — the same element that stood on the old arms of Vigo Rendena, and which here represents the landscape — and above it a golden eagle with open wings, which was the symbol of the former comune of Darè and means sovereignty, strength and courage. It is worth doing the sum: in the official description appear the emblems of two of the three merged comuni, while to the third, Villa Rendena, went the town hall. The churches, on the other hand, stayed where they were, one for each village: San Lorenzo at Vigo Rendena, San Martino at Villa Rendena, Santa Maria Assunta at Javrè and the chapel of San Rocco at Darè. That is how you recognise a scattered comune: it has no centre, it has four bell towers.
