The comune of Tre Ville came into being on the first of January 2016, from the merger of Montagne, Preore and Ragoli, which is its chief place. But those three villages, in a way, had been one thing already long before: the church of San Faustino, which stands at the cemetery of Ragoli, was for centuries the main religious centre of all three settlements, and the first written record that names it is of 1249, although the building is certainly older. The other churches, instead, tell of the scattering: Santa Maria Maddalena at Preore, San Giacomo Maggiore at Irone, San Bartolomeo at Larzana.
The names of these places come from far off. Some end in -ana — Larzana, Bolzana, Cerana — and they are formations the Romans built by adding that suffix to the name of the owner of a holding; confirming that presence there is also a Roman sestertius found at the locality of Prà da l'àsan. Ragoli would be of uncertain origin and would come from rago, cleared ground, or from ragare, to clear. Preore, instead, would be the Latin prae ore, that is, before the mouth, at the opening: the village lies before the Scaléta and before the pass of Durone, and the name says exactly where it is. Preore, for that matter, counted for something: it was the old chief place of the communities of the Giudicarie and in the fifteenth century it housed the prince-bishop's vicar and the court with civil jurisdiction over the whole valley.
