Strembo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 531 · Postal code: 38080

In 1928 Fascism stitched three villages together: Bocenago and Caderzone were merged into Strembo, and in 1947 they broke away again, each going back to being itself. The municipality is watered by the Sarca, and some of the waterfalls of the Val di Genova fall inside its boundaries. The church of San Tommaso is attested in 1381 and was rebuilt in the eighteen hundreds.

In the Giorgio Ducoli park stands a wooden Haflinger horse that the sculptor Martalar made out of the roots of trees brought down by storm Vaia. The roots, some twenty of them, were hunted for more than a year across the Giudicarie valleys, from Madonna di Campiglio down to Storo, and shredded by machine so they would look like a coat; larch was chosen because it is hard and because it has the chestnut colour of the horse. Here in the Rendena the Haflinger was the tractor of the days when there were no tractors. The statue will last about twenty years, and then nature will take back what it had made.
