Chiesa di San Floriano

📍 Rovereto, Trentino-South Tyrol · 41/100

The church of San Floriano is the parish church of Lizzana, a hamlet of Rovereto, and one of the oldest baptismal churches in the diocese of Trento: its first mention in documents dates from 1196, but a place of worship seems to have existed as early as the fifth century. It is recorded in the will of Guglielmo da Castelbarco, of 1319, and in 1470 by the archpriest Leonardo Contarini, who lists the churches born of this mother church in Rovereto and Vallarsa. In the seventeenth century it was raised and lengthened, and between 1669 and 1672 it received a new high altar. After the Napoleonic occupation, giving up the idea of rebuilding because of the cost, between 1811 and 1814 it was enlarged with a transept and a new presbytery.

What to see

The façade is Neoclassical, with a large architraved portal topped by a small pediment echoing the one at the top. Beside the portal two frescoes remain, the Last Judgement and Saint Christopher: the façade was frescoed in the first half of the sixteenth century. The bell tower rises set back on the left, its belfry opened by four single-light windows with the clock below.

The interior has a single nave, divided into four bays, with small side chapels. In the first bay, near the entrance, are the choir loft and the original font.

Visiting

Opening and Mass times should be checked with the parish of Lizzana.

Our editors' tip

The restorations of the early two-thousands, in redoing the outer plaster, uncovered traces of the first building, such as old single-light windows later walled up. San Marco in Rovereto also depended on this mother church, and separated from it only in 1582.
