Borgo Chiese was born on the first of January of 2016 from the fusion of Brione, Cimego and Condino, with the town hall at Condino; but it had happened once before. In 1928 Condino had taken in the suppressed comuni of Brione, Castel Condino and Cimego, and in 1946 those territories had been detached again to reconstitute the three comuni. The comune of 2016 therefore remakes, almost ninety years later, almost exactly the comune of 1928: almost, because Castel Condino stayed out, and it is the only one of the four that carries the name of Condino inside its own. Cimego gives the measure of the thing: made an Italian comune in 1920, after the annexation of the Venezia Tridentina to the Kingdom of Italy; aggregated to Condino in 1928; reconstituted in 1946; and abolished again in 2016. Four changes of administrative existence in less than a century.
The oldest paper kept in the communal archive of Condino is of the fifth of September of 1221 and concerns the settlement of a quarrel between village communities: here the boundaries were being argued over long before the fusions. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built from 1495 over an older church, and in the church of San Lorenzo there are frescoes by Simone II Baschenis. In 1866 Garibaldi's men came down the valley, and there was fighting at Condino. At Cimego the upper part of the village was rebuilt after the bombardments of the First World War, while the borgata of Quartinago came through the centuries nearly intact and still looks like the medieval village it is. The dish is polenta carbonera: yellow flour and buckwheat flour, salame, butter and aged cheeses.
