Aldous Huxley called it "the best picture in the world", and in 1944 the phrase saved the town: British officer Tony Clarke, remembering it, halted the shelling of Sansepolcro — and the Resurrection by Piero della Francesca, born here, still hangs in its place in the civic museum, beside the Misericordia polyptych.
The town of the Crossbow Palio, contested with Gubbio in costume since ancient times, is also the birthplace of Buitoni, founded in 1827 on a family recipe. Among Renaissance palaces and lace workshops, the upper Tiber valley flows just outside the gates.
