Aldous Huxley called it "the best picture in the world", and in 1944 the phrase saved the town: British officer Tony Clarke, remembering it, halted the shelling of Sansepolcro — and the Resurrection by Piero della Francesca, born here, still hangs in its place in the civic museum, beside the Misericordia polyptych.
