Twelve kilometers west of Florence, this municipality of 18,960 residents holds three titles: a center of sandstone quarrying, Italian saffron, and music. Known as Lastra a Gangalandi until 1821, the town is intimately associated with Enrico Caruso. The tenor lived at Villa Caruso di Bellosguardo, an estate now serving as a public museum.
Rising from the Arno river to the 286-meter peak of San Romolo hill, the area held strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Its original core formed around the Pieve di San Martino a Gangalandi. A detour to this historic church provides excellent context for understanding the early military layout of the valley.
