Until 1929 this comune was called Casellina e Torri, after the two villages that had formed it by merging on 23 May 1774; Scandicci was only one of its hamlets, and took over when the town hall moved there in 1868. For decades before that, something odd was true: the comune had no seat within its own territory but inside Florence, in a palace on via della Condotta. The old name appears as early as the late tenth century, when Marchioness Willa of Tuscany gave the Badia of Florence the castle of Scandicci.
The bags and leathers of the great luxury houses are largely made here: Scandicci is the world capital of high-end leatherwork, a district of workshops and schools — the MITA trains tomorrow's masters — working in the elegant shadow of Florence. The tram reaches the Florentine centre in twenty minutes, and by now the two built-up areas touch with no visible boundary. The Acciaiolo castle, restored with its gardens, and the hill of San Martino alla Palma are a reminder that the Tuscan countryside begins at once: the territory runs from the Arno to the valley of the Pesa. The abbey of Settimo, a thousand years old, is the monument you do not expect among the sheds of the craft.
