The church of San Romolo stands at Colonnata, in the municipality of Sesto Fiorentino. It dates from the thirteenth century and was remodelled in 1620. What makes it special are its porcelain furnishings from the Ginori manufactory at Doccia, the porcelain works based in Sesto itself.
What to see
The altar is faced with brightly coloured porcelain, and in the centre is the tabernacle with a porcelain door painted by Giovan Battista Fanciullacci in 1783. Above the altar rises a Christ crucified in white porcelain, and a set of candlesticks completes the arrangement.
Other porcelain works are the Crucifix of the Company of San Giovanni Decollato, of 1753, and the Angels in «masso bastardo» ware modelled by Gaspero Bruschi in the years 1760-1770.
Visiting
The church is at Colonnata, a village of Sesto Fiorentino. Opening hours should be checked with the parish.
Our editors' tip
In the Company's hall a series of large Apostles frescoed at the end of the sixteenth century leads to a fifteenth-century frescoed Pietà.
