Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Capraia Isola celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the island preserves the Forte di San Giorgio.
Capraia is the island of the Tuscan archipelago furthest from the mainland: it lies closer to Corsica than to the Tuscan coast, and it is the Italian municipality with the fewest inhabitants among those that reach the sea. It was born of a volcano, and half of the eruption cone can still be seen in the Cala Rossa. The coasts are high and rocky, without beaches. The name comes from the goats the Greeks and the Romans found here: the wild ones are now extinct.
In the fourth century the island became a refuge for hermits, and then for a community of monks who cleared its most fertile ground and planted vines brought from Africa. In the ninth century the Saracen pirates came: the inhabitants left and Capraia stayed deserted for two centuries, becoming a pirate base. In 962 the emperor Otto I granted it in fief to Pisa, which tried to repopulate it with Pisans and Corsicans.
