Marciana Marina

Province: Livorno · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,946 · Postal code: 57033

It is the smallest municipality in Tuscany by area, and in the eighteenth century, when the harbour was busy, they called it the «Little Marseille». The first houses stood at the Cotone, which in the local speech means a big boulder, beside a natural landing place; the first stone of the real harbour was laid on 10 September 1911.

In the coat of arms, granted in 1886, there are three golden bees: a nod to Napoleon's heraldry, which Elba remembers well. The Paolina beach carries a Napoleonic name too, but a hotel keeper gave it in 1949: before that it was called Castiglioncello, and there are the ruins of a Roman building there. Since 2012 the village has been the set of I delitti del BarLume.
