Marciana

Province: Livorno · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,208 · Postal code: 57030

The Appiano princes, who held Elba, chose Marciana for the summer and set up a mint here; of their time there remain the gate of Donna Paola and the chapel of Sant'Agapito. The village's coat of arms, an anvil between two picks, was used for decades without anyone ever having granted it: they put it all in order only in 2019.

In the sea in front of this coast some of the most important Roman wrecks in Italy have been found: the one at Procchio, the one at Chiessi and the two at Sant'Andrea. High up, on Monte Capanne, there remain the prehistoric settlements and the caprili, the shepherds' stone shelters, which here all have a name: di Capepe, della Stretta, di Natalino. On 20 November 1943 the Wehrmacht carried out a round-up at Marciana and in the villages nearby.
