Saint Barbara, patron of Rio's miners
📅 Every year, on 4 December
Rio celebrates Saint Barbara, patron of miners, on 4 December, in a town tied to Elba's mining history.
Rio was born on the first of January 2018 from the merger of Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba, after a referendum: the offices are at Rio Marina, the council meets at Rio nell'Elba. The arms were chosen by the citizens in a vote: the tower of Rio Marina with its polygonal base, the three golden bees of one village and the mountain with the pickaxes of the other.
The pickaxes are the iron, which for centuries was everybody's trade here: the mines are now a park and a museum of Elban minerals. The comune also owns four islets offshore — Palmaiola, Cerboli, Ortano and the isola dei Topi — while up in the hills there remain the ruins of Grassera, a medieval village, and on the coast those of a Roman villa at Capo Castello.
