Capoliveri

Province: Livorno · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,763 · Postal code: 57031

What the name means is not known: in 1260 it is written Capolibero, and there are two explanations, the god Liber, that is Bacchus, for the vines already here in Roman times, or «free» because this piece of the island is surrounded by the sea. Since the fourteenth century the quarters have been called Borgo, Castello and Porta a Staldo: the last comes from the Lombard gastald, the steward.

On the fourteenth of July they hold the feast of the Innamorata, with torches out on the water. The story says that in that cove Lorenzo was killed by pirates and Maria threw herself in after him; and the pirates are no ornament: Capoliveri was taken by Barbarossa in 1544 and by Dragut in 1553. The legend came back in the eighteenth century, when a Spaniard, Domingo Cardenas, said he had seen a girl on the beach.
