Saint James, patron of Porto Azzurro
📅 Every year, on 25 July
Porto Azzurro celebrates Saint James on 25 July, in the church dedicated to him.
The village was called Longone until 1873, then Porto Longone, and from 1947 Porto Azzurro. The change has a reason on record: senator Giovan Battista Queirolo remarked that to anyone who had never been there the name brought to mind only the prison, and that a place so full of light would be better served by «Porto Azzurro or Porto Verde». The comune took the first.
On the headland stands the fort that Philip III of Spain had raised in 1604: here began the State of the Presidi, Spanish, then Austrian, then of the Bourbons of Naples. In 1906 Capoliveri broke away and became a comune of its own, but the arms of Porto Azzurro still hold the two together: the castle of Longone and the dolphin coiled round an anchor, which was Capoliveri's sign.
