Abetone Cutigliano

Province: Pistoia · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,248 · Postal code: 51024

At Pian degli Ontani, on 11 February 1803, Beatrice Bugelli was born, a shepherdess who could not read and improvised in ottava rima: Niccolò Tommaseo climbed up here to hear her and wrote about her in Vieusseux's Antologia, praising the purity of her language. She died at Cutigliano in 1885 and has remained Beatrice di Pian degli Ontani, one of the great names of improvised poetry.

The municipality is recent: it was born on the first of January 2017 from the merger of Abetone and Cutigliano, and the coat of arms granted in 2020 puts the symbols of the two villages together. A cable car has joined Cutigliano to the Doganaccia since 2003, the fir woods of Campolino and Abetone are nature reserves, and in the high fields they grow the white potato of Melo.
