Feast of Saint Faustus
📅 Every year, on 18 September
On 18 September Castellina in Chianti celebrates Saint Faustus; the village also preserves its old fortress.
In 1430 Florence sent Filippo Brunelleschi to say how Castellina should be fortified and what it would cost. It was not enough: in 1478 the town fell, and the defence was directed by Giuliano da Sangallo while the besiegers were commanded by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The Sienese kept it until 1483.
Between 1934 and 1939, at Ricavo, there worked a farm colony where young Jews who had fled Germany and eastern Europe learned the trade from the local sharecroppers, meaning to go on to Palestine: about two hundred of them passed through, and it was the racial laws that closed it. On the arms, meanwhile, crows the cock of the Lega del Chianti, one of whose three terzieri Castellina led.
