The patron of Montalcino is Maria Santissima del Soccorso, Our Lady of Succour, celebrated on 8 May.
It is a devotion that comes from far away: the cult of the Virgin of Succour, the Succurre Miseris, was born in Palermo in 1306 and made her patron above all of southern towns — Sciacca, Castellammare del Golfo, Caltavuturo, San Severo — as well as Cori, in Lazio. Montalcino is the Tuscan exception on the list.
