Built during the 12th century along present-day Strada Provinciale 53 in the municipality of Pienza, the Castello di Spedaletto originated as a fortified property belonging to Siena's Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala. During the 15th century, the medieval site underwent extensive reconstruction, converting the original castle into a grancia, a fortified agricultural farm. The outer gate system with its curtain wall was erected in 1446, while an additional warehouse building was integrated into the complex during the 19th century.
What to see
The complex is defined by a quadrangular layout with four corner tower structures, notably the northwestern tower which retains its upper merlons. In front of the northern elevation stands an L-shaped group of service buildings used historically as storage facilities. The western wall features two crenellated turrets at its ends and a central merloned watchtower commanding the main gate, linked to the southern turret by a stretch of defensive curtain wall. Directly adjoining the fortified complex stands the Church of San Niccolò a Spedaletto and its attached rectory.

Located along Strada Provinciale 53 in the countryside near Pienza in the province of Siena, the exterior walls and surrounding historic structures of Spedaletto are clearly viewable from the road. The layout offers an intact look at how 12th-century defenses adapted into 15th-century granaries and 19th-century storage spaces.
