Cannara

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 4,308 · Postal code: 06033

In 1221 Francis of Assisi founded the Third Order here at Cannara, the order of lay people, and clothed the first man who followed him: Lucio Modestini, a local.

The town sat among the marshes, and its name comes from the reed that grew there: on the coat of arms a griffin grips a cut reed in its claws. The griffin is Perugia's, and the people of Cannara won the right to use it when they submitted to the city in 1291 in exchange for protection against Assisi. From 1424 to 1648 they were a fief of the Baglioni; today the 4,308 residents live on the left bank of the Topino, in the middle of the Umbrian valley.
