Bettona

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 4,302 · Postal code: 06084

In 2016, in a council storeroom inside the convent of San Crispolto, a marble bust turned up: a self-portrait by Antonio Canova, signed and dated 1812. Restored, since 2021 it has been in the town museum.

Bettona is the only Etruscan town on the eastern bank of the Tiber, and its thirteenth-century walls still contain stretches of the Etruscan ones. In 1352 Perugia took it, burned it and pulled it down: it carried off 157 notables and even the body of Saint Crispoldus, which came home only in 1371. In the museum, alongside the Canova, there are three works by Perugino. From the ramparts the 4,302 residents look out on Perugia, Assisi and Spello.
