Saint Vincent, the first bishop
📅 Every year, on 6 June
On 6 June Bevagna celebrates Saint Vincent, its first bishop and patron; a few weeks later the town's four gaite go back to the Middle Ages.
The cloths woven here were so well known that they took the town's name: they were called bevagne. Earlier still, as a Roman town, Mevania had a port on the Topino, which boats could then work their way up, and it was a municipium from 90 BC.
The baths and the amphitheatre survive, and on piazza Silvestri two Romanesque churches: San Michele, signed by the masters Binello and Rodolfo, and San Silvestro, finished in 1195. The coat of arms was granted by Pope Innocent VI in 1360, with the letters O S F, ob servatam fidem, for the faith kept. The earlier one had honey jars. The 5,074 residents still call their quarters gaite, as in Lombard times.
