Gualdo Cattaneo

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 6,278 · Postal code: 06035

Legend has it that in 975 a German count, Edoardo Cattaneo, founded a castle here: Gualdum Captaneorum, the wood of the captains. The first part of the name does come from wald, forest.

Castles, indeed, are still plentiful: Simigni, Barattano, Grutti, Speltara, the Pilota at San Terenziano, the fort Gregory XII had built in 1415 at Pomonte. The keep in the main town was raised by the lords of Foligno between 1494 and 1498. At Cavallara stands the Roman bridge, a single arch of travertine blocks, on the old line of the Via Flaminia. The 6,278 residents make oil and Sagrantino.
