Fratta Todina

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,840 · Postal code: 06054

The name tells how the first defensive enclosure was made: a fratta, a palisade of interwoven branches. In the documents it appears as Fracta Episcopi, because the land belonged to the bishop's table of Todi.

Fratta first appears in 1177, when Frederick Barbarossa came down into Italy. In 1331 Todi decided to ring it with walls, and from a village it became a castle; in 1416 Carlo Malatesta of Rimini and the captains taken with him in battle near Perugia were locked up in its fortress. At Spineta stands one of the oldest Franciscan convents, of 1291. The 1,840 residents live between the Tiber and the Faena stream, with the seventeenth-century bishop's palace in the middle of the town.
