Deruta

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 9,456 · Postal code: 06053

At the sanctuary of the Madonna del Bagno the walls are covered with more than seven hundred maiolica ex votos: each records a disaster survived, painted by the people who worked the clay round about.

The oldest document about maiolica in Deruta is dated 12 August 1290, and the town has done little else since. The name, on the other hand, may come from the Latin diruta, meaning brought down, crumbling. The regional Ceramics Museum takes in the San Salvatore kiln; on 25 November, for Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the oldest potters in town are honoured in church. On the first Sunday of September the three quarters of the 9,456 residents compete in the Palio della Brocca.
