Collazzone

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,578 · Postal code: 06050

In the convent of San Lorenzo, where he had withdrawn, Jacopone da Todi died: at Collazzone the poet spent the last years of his life.

The town sits on top of a steep hill facing the Tiber, closed by high walls with a single gate: the name is said to be colle di Azzone, after the lord who is held to have founded it in the eighth century on behalf of the dukes of Spoleto. Perugia and Todi long fought over it, and in 1314 the war between the two cities destroyed it; from 1332 to 1647 it belonged to the Baglioni. Today the 3,578 residents make oil and raise chianina cattle.
