Feast of Saints Philip and James
📅 Every year, on 3 May
On 3 May Monte Castello di Vibio celebrates Saints Philip and James, in the village that has the smallest Italian-style theatre there is.
In 1808 nine well-off families of the village clubbed together and built themselves a theatre: a bell-shaped plan, as the Italian style requires, and the smallest of dimensions. Closed in 1951 as unsafe, it reopened restored in 1993, and has presented itself ever since as the smallest theatre in the world.
The decorations were painted by Luigi Agretti, from La Spezia. The town sits on a hill above the Tiber valley, closed by its walls; the Vibio was added in 1863, after unification, to tell it from the other Monte Castellos, and probably comes from the Roman gens Vibia. In 1254 Guelph cavalry drove out the Ghibellines and did damage. The 1,620 residents grow olives, cereals and tobacco.
