Feast of Saint Rinaldo
📅 Every year, on 9 February
On 9 February Nocera Umbra celebrates Saint Rinaldo, the bishop who adopted an orphan boy and whom the people proclaimed a saint as soon as he died, in 1217.
The water of Nocera was so good that in the seventeenth century they carried it as far as Constantinople: the town has been known for its springs for centuries. The name, in Umbrian, sounded like Noukria, the new one.
Above the town stands the Campanaccio, all that is left of the fortress of the Lombard gastalds: in 1421 the massacre of the Trinci took place there, and the earthquake of 1997 left only one of its sides standing. It has been rebuilt, and the 5,953 residents got their whole historic centre back only in 2016. The church of San Francesco, with its frescoes by Matteo da Gualdo, houses the picture gallery; the grave goods of the nearly two hundred Lombard tombs dug here are in Rome.
