Valtopina

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,486 · Postal code: 06030

Between the tenth and eleventh centuries the castles of the valley joined into a federation, the Universitas Vallis Topini: a viscounty of the Duchy of Spoleto that governed itself, with the viscount in the castle of Poggio and a council of heads of households.

The statutes Corrado Trinci issued in 1434 stayed in force until 1816. People lived on the hills, and down in the valley, on the Via Flaminia, were the innkeepers and the men who repaired carts: that village was called Cerqua, and the inhabitants still call it that. The town hall came down to the valley in 1867, with the railway. From 1927 to 1947 Valtopina was annexed to Foligno; the 1,486 residents got their comune back in 1948.

Saint Bernardine, patron of a village born from his ancient fair

📅 Every year, on 20 May

Valtopina celebrates Saint Bernardine on 20 May; from the second half of the 15th century, at the confluence of the river Topino with the Fosso dell'Anna, an ancient fair was held in his honour that gave rise to the village of Cerqua, today's Borgo di Valtopina.
