Feast of Saint Bartholomew
📅 Every year, on 25 August
On 25 August Torgiano celebrates Saint Bartholomew in the church named after him, at the close of the Umbrian summer.
The name is thought to come from the tower of Janus, the god who looks both ways: below the town the Tiber and the Chiascio meet, and the hill is almost an island between the two rivers.
One of the towers survives, and another forms the base of the bell tower. The walls date from 1276, with two gates and two towers; in 1294 the Perugians added one shaped like a fortress. The palace the Baglioni built in the seventeenth century holds the Wine Museum, and a little further on stands the museum of the olive and its oil: the 6,520 residents live on DOC and DOCG. At Brufa the sculptures stand in an open-air park.
