Baschi

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,803 · Postal code: 05023

The town is named after its founder's nickname: Ugolino di Biscaglia, a Carolingian officer who came to Italy with Charlemagne, was given an old castle in the Tiber valley, built a new one and called it after himself, le Basque.

His descendants came to control more than sixty castles between Todi and Orvieto. Then, in 1553, the property of Attilio Baschi was confiscated for his crimes, and the family's two fortresses were pulled down. The parish church of San Nicolò holds a polyptych by Giovanni di Paolo; at Pantanelli, in the convent of Sant'Angelo, there are fifteenth-century frescoes and the floor tombs of the Baschi. The 2,803 residents live on the hill above the Tiber.
