Guardea

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,863 · Postal code: 05025

The castle of the Poggio began in 1034 as an imperial fief, on top of a seventh-century Byzantine tower, and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger restored it. Plenty of people took it over the centuries: among them Cesare Borgia, who gave it to his sister Lucrezia.

Later it became an art centre, and John Steinbeck stayed there. The town's name says what this place was: a watch over the Tiber valley. At the end of the fourteenth century the inhabitants left the old castle of Guardege, as the peace between Todi and Amelia required, and came down lower. From the land of the 1,863 residents you enter the nature reserve of Lake Alviano.
