Montecchio

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,723 · Postal code: 05020

The castle was born as a place of exile: around 1165 the Chiaravalle built it for the Ghibellines whom the Guelphs had driven out of Todi. The town, first named in documents in 1154, grew in rings around that core.

It always remained Todi's land and passed from family to family: Chiaravalle, Alviano, Baschi, Colonna, Atti, and from 1607 the Corsini. It became an autonomous comune only in 1948, splitting from Baschi. At Tenaglie stand Palazzo Ancajani and the museum of peasant life. The 1,723 residents trade in truffles, and now and then one comes up weighing more than two hundred grams.
