Canale d'Agordo

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,172 · Postal code: 32020

In a village of a thousand people two things began for the first time in Italy: the brewery, opened in 1847 by doctor Zannini when Austria ruled here, and the cooperative dairy, set up in 1872 by the archpriest don Antonio Della Lucia. The brewery was bought in 1887 by three brothers named Luciani, the men who later made Pedavena beer.

On 17 October 1912, in via Rividella, another Luciani was born, Albino: in 1978 he would become pope under the name of John Paul I. Until 1964 the village was called Forno di Canale, from the furnaces where the iron of the Sass Négher mines was smelted: from that iron swords were made for Venice. There are nineteen fountains in the village.
