San Tomaso Agordino

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 683 · Postal code: 32020

San Tomaso Agordino is a scattered comune made up of twenty-five villages, with its town hall at Celat. At Avoscan, down in the valley floor, stood the castle of the Avoscano, the family that in the fourteenth century ruled the Agordino for some twenty-five years: nothing of it is left today, because houses have been built on the site. Tradition says that castle was one of three, raised by three sisters who did not get on — the other two being those of Rocca Pietore and Andraz — but of those sisters nothing else is known, and the story looks more like a legend than a fact.

At Celat there is a house that people here call the Vatican, on account of its size: the ridge beam bears the date 1707, but the original structure is older. The name also tells how people built in the old days: when a son married he did not leave home, he brought his wife into it, and a new piece was added to the house — so, marriage after marriage, these family blocks came into being. In the church of San Tommaso there is an organ of 1802 by Gaetano Callido, the finest Venetian organ builder of his time. And since 2004 the village has had a planetarium: Celat has no light pollution, and when the sky is being observed the lights of the square in front can be switched off.
