Vallada Agordina

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 514 · Postal code: 32020

The church of San Simon stands outside the villages, in a thick wood of firs, larches and beeches, and it is a national monument: it is recorded from the twelfth century, it holds a fresco cycle by Paris Bordone of 1549, and the remains of the poet Valerio Da Pos are kept in it. But painting at Vallada is not confined to churches: among the old farm buildings and the hay barns there are many religious murals that have survived the centuries.

The municipality is scattered in hamlets with old names — Celat, Sachet, Andrich, Toffol, Piaz, Cogul, Mas — and the town hall is at Sachet. People have always left from here: under Venice they went down to work in the city for the season and came back, while from the second half of the nineteenth century they left for Brazil. In the last war the village was ravaged by German troops in reprisal for the partisan struggle.
