Rocca Pietore

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,322 · Postal code: 32023

For four hundred and eleven years this was almost a state: the Magnifica Comunità della Rocca, with its statutes from 1417, paid few taxes, supplied no soldiers, traded with the Tyrol and bought its salt directly in Salzburg, without going through Belluno.

At Saviner there was a court, «el Banch de la Reson»: it was made up of elected heads of families, and it could go as far as a death sentence, even for deeds committed outside the territory. Belluno sent a captain three times a year to check that all was in order. It all ended in 1806, with Napoleon. The comune was called simply Rocca until 1867, but «Pietore», from the Latin for chest, is already in a document of 1148.
