Galliera Veneta

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,042 · Postal code: 35015

The name appears in 1085 as Galera, and probably recalls the Roman gens Galeria; the adjective Veneta, on the other hand, dates from 1867, added by royal decree so as not to confuse it with the Galliera in the province of Bologna.

The villa Cappello, which here they call the Imperiale, has had three very different lives. In 1858 it was bought by the empress Maria Anna of Savoy, wife of Ferdinand the First of Austria; put up for auction in 1929, it ended up with the national insurance institute, which turned it into a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients; during the war the Germans requisitioned it. Today it is largely a nursing home. From this village, too, comes Paola Egonu, the volleyball player, who was born at Cittadella and grew up here.
