Castello di Godego

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,013 · Postal code: 31030

Before the Romans there were the Motte: a great earthwork of the Bronze Age, aligned with the old bed of the Muson and not with the centuriation, which indeed runs past it askew. The name of the village seems to come from the Goths, who put a garrison here; Castello di, on the other hand, was added in 1867, so as not to confuse it with Godega di Sant'Urbano. In the fourteenth century there was still woodland around, and there were wolves: a document of 1318 records that one Giovanni da Godego received forty soldi from the commune of Treviso for catching a she-wolf.

At the end of the Second World War Castello di Godego was the scene of a massacre: it is held to be the last carried out in Italy by the German army. For this the village is twinned with Boves, in Piedmont, where the first had taken place.
