Limena

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,699 · Postal code: 35010

In 1314 the Paduans dug the Brentella canal for a precise reason: the Vicentines were cutting the Bacchiglione upstream, and without water the mills of Padua could not grind and the city was left without bread. The Brentella, linking the Brenta to the Bacchiglione, took that power away from them; the canal branches off the river right here, at Limena.

Guarding the point where the two watercourses meet there was a castle, which Maximilian's troops destroyed in 1509. What remains instead are the colmelloni, flood defences in place since 1370, which the villagers simply call the waterfalls. Limena was already a pieve in a document of Berengar dated 20 April 918.
