Resana

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 9,290 · Postal code: 31023

One of the two frazioni of this comune used to be called Brusaporco. The name of the village itself is a prediale, referring to a Rhaesius or a Resius, but the interesting names are the others: in the bull Justis fratrum of 1152, among the goods of the bishop of Treviso, appears the castrum de Resana, cum villa et foresto, et omnibus pertinentiis suis — so there was a castle belonging to the prelate, perhaps along today's via Castellari; and the castle of Brusaporco too, which is the old name of Castelminio, belonged to the bishop and was governed by an «avogaro» chosen from the Tempesta family. Further back still: the first inhabitants had settled precisely at Castelminio, around the Motte, modest earthworks partly still in place, and from there come both the pre-Roman pottery and the Roman hydriae and amphorae. In 75 before Christ the via Aurelia was traced to link Padua to Asolo: what remains of it is today's via Antica Loreggia, where part of the original bed has been identified.

The modern history of Resana, however, is a history of departures. At the beginning of the twentieth century the village was marked by a strong emigration towards Argentina, Brazil and Australia; in the same years the first local associations were born, the Mutual Aid Society in 1904 and the professional union of Resana within the Veneto union of land workers in 1912, a sign of how hard life was for a population still almost entirely of peasants. In 1908, the Venice-Bassano railway completed, the station was opened thanks to the interest of the minister Ernesto Di Broglio and of Leone Wollemborg, politicians with estates here. After the Great War the economy was weaker still and people left again, now also for France, Belgium, Lombardy and Piedmont; a new exodus came after the Second World War, towards Australia, Canada, Argentina, France, Switzerland and Belgium. Only after 1960, when a crisis hit some of the factories of nearby Castelfranco, did Resana get a chance of artisan and industrial growth of its own.
