Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Castelguglielmo celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
In 1146 Guglielmo III degli Adelardi Marcheselli, who governed Ferrara, rebuilt the castle that had fallen into ruin and renamed it after himself. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt always on the same spot until 1780, when the tower came down: the walls had fallen earlier and no longer held it up. Its foundations are left, under the square.
In 1945, after two German soldiers had been killed, forty-two people were shot at Villamarzana: nearly all of them came from here and from the villages around, and the mausoleum that remembers them is in the village. Six years later, on 14 November 1951, the Po broke its banks and more than half the inhabitants left: evacuated to other cities, most of them never came back.
