Bagnolo di Po

Province: Rovigo · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,374 · Postal code: 45022

The name comes from balneum, the place of pools: water was always here, and the Este and Venetian documents speak of marshes for months on end. The territory was given to the church of Adria in 938; then came the Bentivoglio reclamations and, in the nineteenth century, the pumping stations. In two centuries the Po, the Adige, the Tartaro, the Mincio and the Castagnaro all broke their banks, one after another.

In 1478 Duke Borso d'Este granted land to Francesco Ariosto, the poet's uncle, and Ludovico's father, captain general of the Polesine, had a villa built there that they called the Barchetta: two of the village's quarters are still named Arioste. The last great flood was that of 1951, when the Po broke: from then on people began to leave for the places with factories.
