Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
📅 Every year, on 7 October
On 7 October Polesella celebrates its patron Our Lady of the Rosary; the town also preserves Villa Morosini.
The Polesine takes its name from the polesini, the little islands that now and then managed to rise out of the marsh and allowed settlements that were always temporary, wiped out by the next flood. Here the river moved twice: with the Ficarolo breach of 1152 the Po shifted north and made the fortune of Raccano; the floods of the fifteenth century pushed it south again, Raccano declined and its people came down to the new banks, merging the two small villages on either side of the Fossa into a single one, Polesella.
The centre grew on the embankment itself, and masonry was built into that embankment for a single purpose: to let a wooden and sandbag parapet be raised on it quickly when the Po rose, so that the water would not reach the square below. The system held for centuries, and was dismantled only in 1957. In front of the village, on the twenty-second of December 1509, the Ferrarese artillery destroyed the Venetian fleet in a naval battle that Ludovico Ariosto put into his Orlando furioso.
