San Fior

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,813 · Postal code: 31020

The church of San Fior is two churches: the new one, twentieth-century and neo-Gothic, was built around the old one, which is still there, set into its right-hand side, and in 1998 it was restored, bringing the old frescoes back to light. Inside there is something you would not expect in a country parish church: the polyptych of Saint John the Baptist by Cima da Conegliano, eight panels in a wooden frame. And then a marble font dated 1494 and a wooden crucifix attributed to Andrea Brustolon.

A religious congregation was born here too: the Sisters of the Holy Face, founded by Maria Pia Mastena, who is buried at San Fior. The village is full of wayside shrines and votive niches, in the old hamlets as in the new estates; one of the hamlets carries the name of the poet and patriot Sebastiano Barozzi, who was born there, and a plaque on the house wall recalls him.
