The name is a whirlpool: gorgo, like the eddies the river once made here. The earliest mention, shortly after the year one thousand, calls it Gurgus Molendinorum, «whirlpool of the mills», and Gorgo dei Molini is still the name of one of the boroughs that make up the village. The second half of the name is recent and administrative: a royal decree of 1886 added the Monticano, the main watercourse of the area.
The village lived in the orbit of Oderzo, which in Roman times was one of the leading centres of north-eastern Italy: capitals, friezes and cornices come from these fields, now gathered in the Eno Bellis civic archaeological museum. Subjected together with Oderzo to the Republic of Venice in 1388, it fell within the podesteria of Motta and became a summer retreat for patrician families. In the autumn of 1917, after Caporetto, it found itself beyond the Piave front and was occupied by the Central Powers.
