Ponte di Piave

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,312 · Postal code: 31047

In June 1918 the Austrians tried to cross the Piave right here, along the road towards Treviso, and were driven back at Fagarè, where the ossuary now stands. The river was in flood and would not let them through: from this stretch of water comes the best-known line of the Leggenda del Piave, the one where the river murmurs that the foreigner shall not pass.

The same river, on 4 November 1966, broke the embankment between Negrisia and the town and flooded everything. During the rescue Eros Perinotto was killed, a soldier on a tank that plunged into the chasm left by a collapsed bridge: there is a monument to him in Piazza Garibaldi. Around the village they grow Raboso, still partly on the old bellussera trellises.
