Sernaglia della Battaglia

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,325 · Postal code: 31020

Until 1924 it was called simply Sernaglia: the addition della Battaglia came then, in memory of the Great War, as had already happened to neighbouring Moriago and Nervesa. The Piave marks the southern boundary and runs a few metres below the fields, inside a wooded scarp; the coat of arms, adopted in 1950, says the rest in three signs: a blue band for the river, three green hills for the ground, and two crossed silver swords in memory of the victorious beginning of the battle of the Piave, in October 1918. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from 1922 because the previous pieve had been destroyed in the fighting, and the monuments of the village are to the Arditi, to the civilian victims and to the partisans.

There is also one to the emigrant, however, and it is not an ornament. In the twentieth century living conditions drove a great many people out of Sernaglia, and those who stayed lived in part on the money their fellow villagers sent from abroad: it was those remittances that were invested in workshops and then in small firms, above all in furniture, and that is how the place left its purely rural condition behind. In 1992 the municipal library, named after Giocondo Pillonetto, was opened by two writers of this country, Mario Rigoni Stern and the poet Andrea Zanzotto. To the north-east, meanwhile, lie the palù, the wetlands typical of the upper Treviso country.
